love letter to yourself

Write Yourself a Love Letter

Dear Rob,

Wow! It’s hard to believe we’ve been together for over 26 years. I can’t imagine my life without you, but sometimes it feels like just yesterday that we started this journey together. Other times, I can’t help but feel astonished by how much I’ve seen you grow over the years. It’s been exciting to watch you come into your own.

In the last few years, I’ve seen you face immense difficulties with overwhelming courage. I’ve seen you make tough choices, stand by your values, and decide what sort of person you want to be. I’m proud of you, and so glad to have such a strong person in my life.

I’ve also appreciated, lately, how you’ve decided to approach your appearance. Okay, let me just say it: Your broad shoulders, glowingly clear skin, stunning blue eyes, fiery red hair, your deep voice, your sense of style, your confidence—this, and so much more, make you sexy. But what’s really impressed me lately is how much you’ve overcome your old complaints about yourself.

The way you’ve come to admire your strengths and accept the ways you may not meet the Calvin Klein ideals of masculinity is really refreshing. To see you so easily set aside your complaints and commit to the values you’ve chosen makes me smile. I think more people could do with that sort of outlook.

But don’t think I’m just using you for your body. Your eloquence often strikes me, deeply. Your ability to think quickly and creatively, to approach topics not merely with insight but with an ability to incite others, makes you a rare and valuable part of any conversation. You’re so fun to talk to (even when we get strange looks on the bus). For all your intellect, though, you still care about connecting with people. You’re fun; you know how to play in ways that many have forgotten. You value your friends, you value people, and you’re willing to fight for those values. You’ve chosen who to be, and what you’ve chosen is good.

I also wanted to thank you for the little things you give me on a daily basis. Thanks for taking such good care of me, physically and emotionally, and for providing me with room to grow. Thanks you for not guilting me when I decide I just want to ignore productivity and have some fun instead. Thanks for cleaning my room, for making my bed every morning, for buying such a nice desk for me—for everything you’ve done to create a safe space for me in the world. It means a lot to me that you’re willing to take care of me in those ways.

I love you, Rob. I’m so grateful to have you. I’m so glad you’ve decided I’m worth fighting for.

Yours, until my dying breath,

Rob
