Greetings fellow writers,
The second BCF prompt is up, and my entry is complete. You’ll find it below, after a few thoughts about this flash fiction competition.
A Few Words About How Awesome BCF Is
Business Card Fiction was started by Lillie McFerrin (who I’ve had the great pleasure of doing flash fiction with before), Ruth Long (infamous in the online flash fiction scene), and J.D. Wenzel (who, in his awesomeness, masterminded the BCF concept) . The notion of BCF is simple: You write a piece of flash fiction designed (and even formatted) to fit on the back on a business card. (You’ll see my second entry in a moment, so don’t worry if you’re confused.)
I love BCF because it allows an opportunity to take the notion of flash fiction and put it in an interesting, actionable context. Normally, when we have these 150-word (or shorter) pieces, we’re goofing around for the sake of it. With BCF, we’re playing with a contextual frame for presenting our work. You could actually print these things on business cards, and what a fun way to show yourself off as a writer! I may well print some up in the not-so-distant future.
You also get to combine typography, minor color choice, or even small graphics if you’d like. It makes this a mixed-medium project that really stimulates your creativity. It’s been fascinating to see some of the results so far. There were 19 contributions for the first prompt, and the second one already has 10 entries. Be sure to add your own!
Now, I’ve already qualified for the BCF final for December—but your chance to do likewise, and earn fabulous prizes, awaits. Check out the prompt page for more details. I strongly encourage you to participate. This is a great community, and flash fiction as a medium is a fun, effective way to hone your skills; it’s like learning to fight in the middle of the Zorro circle.
