This is my contribution to the lovely Lillie McFerrin’s weekly “Five Sentence Fiction” challenge. The idea is simple: Write a five-sentence story based on a one-word prompt. Today’s prompt is “Ending.” For more information on Five Sentence Fiction (FSF), check out Lillie’s site.

When Grim showed up, he came with a bottle of scotch, a box of Kleenex, and a vintage deck of playing cards. (After the first few millenia of practice, he’d figured out that people reacted … poorly to the robe and scythe, and most could use a bit of comfort along with the news that they were now among the dearly departed.)
The playing cards were for those who believed they could get another chance at life if they could beat death in a game—but the cards were marked, and those who tried to play the game often left the world with cries of frustration at Grim’s underhanded ways.
“Everyone feels cheated by death, but the truth is it’s the only fair game,” said Grim, skeletal hand patting the departed’s shoulder in an attempt at comfort. “The rich, the poor—the lucky and unlucky—their stories can be as different as you’d like, but they all having the ending in common.”
