My Level 50

Over the last three weeks, I did some heavy research into the various apps, programs, and systems that allow you to transform your real life into an RPG. While I like this as a notion for all of my to-dos, the primary purpose is fitness.

While I’m loving Habit RPG as a system, it’s quite buggy. I hope to use it a fair deal more once it has greater stability, more features, and better integration with Google Calendar. The “Rising Heroes” app also looks promising, but it’s in the alpha stage of testing. Life RPG is more established but doesn’t have some of the features I’m after (achievements, avatars, etc.) and Fitocracy is a less nerd-focused achievement and level-up system that feels a bit over-complicated for my current aims.

While I’ll definitely return to Habit RPG and I intend to explore Fitocracy a bit more, the most developed resource right now—and the one I’m interested in exploring at this moment—doesn’t have an app or achievements or avatars (although some of this has been promised). Rather, it’s the online community of Nerd Fitness. Since they’re established, socially supportive, and have rules that are 1) unfamiliar to me and 2) difficult to game/break, it’s the most appealing option for the moment.

According to the Nerd Fitness character generator I’m a hobbit assassin/druid. Which sounds about right. I’ll go with druid for now, since I have to pick one, but in my head I’m dual-class (mind if I give a nod to White Silk and call myself a wilder?).

What does this entail?: Meditation, yoga, lots o’ walking, swimming, better eating, stress management.
The website recommends determining what your “Level 50″ (ultimate fitness end-game) looks like. Here’s mine.

Target weight (estimate): 175lbs

While I strongly believe that weight is much less important than body-fat, etc., it’s also far easier to track than any of the more significant factors. What I know is that at 185lbs, I was starting to show a six-pack (when I flexed my stomach and had good lighting) and was somewhere around a 20% body fat (and I know this doesn’t quite make sense, but whatever). So, theoretically, at 175lbs I would be at roughly a 15% body fat. Which I’m totally fine with.

170lbs would theoretically be even better: 12% body fat. But … these things vary, complicate, etc. My weight from week to week will be based on the average of all my weekly weigh-ins. I will only worry about tracking from week to week.

Target heart rate (estimate): 65 bpm

Surprisingly, I’m at about 75bpm right now. However, there are days when—for reasons that I don’t understand yet—my average resting heart rate is above 90. While I don’t know exactly what my heart will be like when I’m 60 pounds lighter and in a routine of regular cardio exercise (beyond my standard walking routine), I’m hoping my heart will be at 65bpm or healthier. I’m also hoping that I can make anxiety management and improved diet a part of my life and, through that, decrease my resting heart rate.
