The Destiny of the Blog

A few months ago, I combined all of my blogging properties into this one blog. Strength in unity, I thought. But recently it’s become clear that this blog is targeting a specific audience for a specific task: My content is meant for writers who want to learn more about writing as a craft.

Awesome. But where do I put entries that are about my written work, personal life, or travels? Why is this blog about writing even on a website that’s connected to my name?

It’s hard to admit that this union was a mistake, but yeah, a divorce is necessary. Here’s how we’re handling custody: This blog will be split into three territories. (Tempted to make a Lear reference here, but nothing’s coming to me. Anyway….)

  • RobDYoung.com will remain as my “me” blog. Its primary audience is those who are interested in my life and written work. The site will keep my portfolio and entries such as: my recent one about my grandfather, my novelization of Green Eggs & Ham, my post about loneliness, my random poetry/cnf/fiction, my booky-type anouncements, etc.

In this divorce, “Rob D Young” gets the Facebook page. These items will not be sent out in a newsletter. If you’re interested in these items, subscribe to my Facebook page but don’t worry about the newsletter.

  • AdventurousRob.com will feature travel-related content. During my six months in the British Isle, as well as sporadically before and since, I used this site to share pictures, travel narratives, tips, etc. While a lot of my travel writing is “creative nonfiction” in style, the target audience is simply different. This site will get all my travel-oriented content. For the time being, it will be a back-burner project—receiving the same basic level of attention my travel entries have received in the recent past.
  • CreativeWritingCWC.com (also found at CreativeWritingCollective.com) will be a continuation of the main project of this blog: Articles and essays about the writing craft. This site will contain the vast majority of the content currently found on this site, including the weekly writerly humor; the author, event, and case study spotlights; the lessons, exercises, and games; the write-brained series. Basically, everything that isn’t distilled into one of the two other sites listed above.

Separating CWC into its own site will allow me to focus the content, get more writers on board, and make the first steps in fulfilling the long-term goals of the CWC.

For the time being, certain properties of mine will remain mixed. My YouTube page and Twitter, for example, will continue to shout out content from all my sites.

When is all this happening? To avoid too much madness, the separate blogs will be set up in parts. CWC will go up in the next two weeks but will not contain all the content from this site. It will, however, be the home for all new posts. Over the next month, the content of this site will be imported over to the CWC.

For the time being, the sites will be similar in appearance (for the sake of easy coding), but different in navigation and branding.

Your feedback throughout this process is appreciated.

Write on,

Rob
